Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetichová ran a new marathon world record in Chicago in 2:09:56 h. She improved the previous maximum by almost two minutes, which was held by the Ethiopian Tigist Assefová and was 2:11:53 from Berlin last year.

Thirty-year-old Chepngetichová also triumphed in Chicago in 2021 and 2022. Before that, she became world champion in Doha 2019.

She was joined on the podium by the second Ethiopian Sutume Asefa Kebede (2:17:32) and the third Irine Chebet Cheptai from Kenya (2:17:51).

“I feel great, I’m proud of myself. My dream has come true. I thought about the world record, I fought hard and used my work.

The world record belongs to Kenya again and I want to dedicate this triumph to Kelvin Kiptum,” Chepngetich said, according to AFP, who paid her respects to her compatriot, who a year ago just in Chicago improved the world record in the marathon in the men’s category to 2:00:35, but by four months later he died in a car accident.

In the men’s competition, a Kenyan also triumphed, John Korir achieved a time of 2:02:44 and claimed his first career victory in the marathon.

Ethiopian Mohamed Esa finished in second place (2:04:39), another Kenyan Amos Kipruto (2:04:50) was third.
