At least 21 people were killed and dozens more injured in an Israeli airstrike on a school building in the central part of the Gaza Strip where displaced Palestinians were hiding. Health workers at the nearby al-Aqsa hospital in the city of Deir al-Bala told Reuters on Thursday.
The affected school, located in the west of Deir al-Bala, serves as a shelter for displaced people. According to local residents, the Israeli airstrike targeted a makeshift police station run by the militant group Hamas inside the school.
The Israeli army did not immediately comment. In its statement, cited by The Times of Israel (TOI), it said that it had struck about 30 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
According to her, these were terrorist cells, weapons warehouses, launching devices, buildings and underground infrastructure. In the central part of the coastal enclave, according to the statement, it “eliminated” a number of militants.
Israeli forces have repeatedly attacked the schools, which have become havens for displaced people in the last year of the war. However, the army accuses the militants of hiding in them.
