A tribute to the history of open-top Land Cruisers
Toyota is presenting numerous customized models at the SEMA Show 2024, currently being held in Las Vegas: among these we find the Toyota Land Cruiser ROX (for « Recreation Open eXperience »), an ambitious concept that we owe to Toyota’s North American design studio, Calty Design Researchbased in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Calty teams, who participated in the design of the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250, have reimagined the iconic open-top Land Cruisers of yesteryearto embody a new era of outdoor adventure:
“We asked ourselves how we could create an even more exciting experience for our Land Cruiser enthusiasts, but from a real-world product perspective”explains Kevin Hunter, President of Calty Design Research at Toyota: “Using the Land Cruiser 250 as a base, we modified the body to open it up, increasing ease of use, functionality and the overall outdoor experience. »
Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept: the ultimate model for leisure
To do this, the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser 250 has been reinvented and modified by more than 50%to create a functional and daring bodywork on this unique and 100% functional model.
Access to the open cockpit is via custom made doorswith open upper and lower sections, while the sliding soft roof opens from front to back. At the rear, the wide door provides access to the loading bed, as well as two integrated seats on the tailgate.
To make the Toyota Land Cruiser ROX ready to face the elements, the interior has been dressed with custom nylon elements 3D printed SLS. The upholstery was done in orange Heritage leather, while the door panels have integrated safety kits, as well as storage straps for accessories. The paintwork of the bodywork was inspired by the “Spring Green” green that was fitted to the iconic Land Cruiser models of the period.
The bodywork is equipped with imposing and robust plastic protections, while the custom-made front and rear bumpers are made of steel, helping to protect the model during escapades off the beaten track. The 18-inch wheels were custom designed and fitted with all-terrain tires, while a LED spotlight bar takes place above the windshield. Finally, the Land Cruiser’s off-road capabilities have been improved with the addition of a independent suspension customized by TRD and forged aluminum suspension arms, allowing the model to be raised by 100 mm.
The Toyota Land Cruiser ROX concept is currently presented at the salon SEMA Showwhich opens November 5-8, 2024 in Las Vegas.
