Today, specialists have begun installing an outdoor skating rink, which has been located near the Daugavpils Ice Palace for the past few years. The start date of its operation will depend on weather conditions.
As a member of the board of the Daugavpils Olympic Center said Andris MorozovWhile the temperature remains above zero, it is planned to recheck the cooling system and other equipment. When the thermometers remain steadily below zero, it will be possible to fill the skating rink. The exact date when the outdoor skating rink will become available to athletes and residents is still unknown.
But the fact that this year there will be no skating rink on Vienibas Square again is known for sure. According to the first vice-mayor Alexey Vasilievathis decision was made for economic reasons:
«Installing a skating rink is very expensive – at least about 140 thousand euros. For comparison, it cost the local government 70 thousand euros to decorate Vienibas Square and a section of Rigas Street, so we consider it irrational to pay that kind of money for one skating rink».
As for other traditional winter activities, provided there is a snowy winter, the Public Utilities Department plans to organize slides in Central Park and Esplanade Park.
If winter does not provide you with stable snow cover, it is possible that a special cannon will be used to produce artificial snow. However, this requires one condition – sub-zero air temperature.
In addition, in the Daugavpils Fortress, as last year, it is planned to open the residence of Father Frost.
