An Xbox handheld is still there, made by a fan

Although Microsoft makes it possible to stream Xbox games on your mobile, an Xbox handheld has never been released. Reason for a fan to still make one, containing an Xbox motherboard.

Sony has created handhelds based on the PlayStation and Nintendo has done the same for its consoles. PC gamers now even have several handhelds to choose from, but Xbox still lags behind when it comes to portable gaming. There are rumors that it would come with some kind of handheld with the next Xbox generation, but that is far from expected.

Xbox-handheld

The reason for Microsoft to work on its own portable gaming device may have to do with two developments. The first is the immense popularity of handhelds, as we see with Steam Deck for example. The second is that we are getting one step closer to cloud gaming due to an increasing digital infrastructure (and therefore better internet). You could then tap a game without having to download a game first, just like you do on Netflix with series, and then you can play immediately.

This is also happening on smartphones to some extent, but many gamers still miss the physical buttons. Reason for a fan named Redherring32 to create an Xbox handheld using a motherboard from an original Xbox console. It has a 9-inch screen and a resolution of 480p. Charging is done at 100 Watts with the USB-C port. Redherring32 did adjust the motherboard to make everything work.

Open source-project

The Modder also plans to make the project open source, so that others can soon make their own Xbox handheld at home. But before then, this DIY handheld will be equipped with a WiFi 6 chip to enable Xbox Live.
