An Yu-seong, a black and white chef from Gwangju, “The reason I gave abalone porridge to the bereaved family was…”

“Prepare abalone porridge to help you regain energy.”

Chef Ahn Yu-seong, who appeared on the Netflix entertainment program ‘Black and White Chef: Culinary Class War’, shared the latest news about helping the bereaved families at Muan International Airport, where the Jeju Air disaster occurred. Chef Ahn visited Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do on the 1st and served abalone porridge, not rice cake soup, to the families of the victims of the Jeju Air plane disaster.

In an interview with SBS Radio’s ‘Kim Tae-hyun’s Political Show’ on the same day, he said, “Tteokguk on the first day of the new year may be meaningful, but the bereaved families are so exhausted and having a hard time.” He added, “It is not easy to get even a single meal down, so I made abalone porridge to help them regain some of their energy.” “I prepared,” he said.

He continued, “I prepared it by boiling it richly with a lot of abalone in the hope that it would be of some help in regaining energy.”

Since most of the victims of this disaster were residents of Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeollabuk-do, Chef Ahn was greatly shocked. Chef Ahn, who is from Gwangju and is Korea’s 16th master chef, learned cooking at a famous Japanese restaurant in Seoul, then returned to his hometown and opened a Japanese restaurant. Chef Ahn has been running a restaurant in Seo-gu, Gwangju for a long time and is known to have a direct or indirect relationship with the victims of the disaster.

He said, “There are people who were customers, and there are PDs who used to broadcast together,” and “I am so heartbroken and sad because they are all related to people in this area just across the bridge.”

Previously, Chef Ahn visited the airport on the 30th of last month, the day after the disaster, preparing 200 servings of kimbap. Chef Ahn said, “I feel so tired and frustrated that I can’t seem to get anything done. I don’t know what the situation at the airport is or what I can do to help, but I thought I would give it a go, so I quickly rolled up some kimbap and went.”

He continued, “It was touching to see him helplessly say, ‘It’s delicious,’ while eating a piece of kimbap that he made with great care,” and added, “I decided to share my sorrow by donating my food-making skills.”

Meanwhile, not only Chef Ahn but other chefs who appeared on Black and White Chef are also participating in helping the bereaved families. Chef Ahn added, “Many chefs, including Chef Ji-Hyung Choi, Chef Ki-Soo Bang, and Chef Hee-Won Lim, are coming down after hearing that we are serving food.”
