Aquilino Ribeiro, Ferreira de Castro and Tomás da Fonseca are writers who knew the rural environment well and described it realistically in their books. For this reason, researcher Ana Isabel Queiroz suggested including literature in the research project Paisagens de Fogo, coordinated by researcher Miguel Carmo from the Institute of Contemporary History, which studies the history of rural fires in Portugal, from the 1950s to the present day. To understand nature and ecosystems, it is necessary to have “a cultural and social dimension”, explains the PhD in Landscape Architecture. The content analysis of 55 literary excerpts, from 29 authors, reveals the use of fire “not only in agricultural activity, but also as a form of resistance to the power of the richest or the central State”. Arsonists are constant figures in the pages of these works and, at times, are the protagonists of the stories.
