Andrey Nikulin: Who wants to live and work behind barbed wire?

Yesterday’s “accidental” shutdown of the Runet exhaustively answers the question of why IT businesses aimed at the global market, and not only them, but also many startups, are flocking from their native country. And most of them have already left long ago.

If you are tied to the whole big world and must constantly be in touch with it, receive and process flows of information, operate with large volumes of data, then how can you afford the risk that at any moment you and your servers can be cut off from external users and world internet? At the touch of a button. It makes no difference whether it was intentional or accidental.

The very existence of such a “big switch” option, which can cut off Runet from the rest of the world, implies that all your investments and efforts are made dependent on the decision of the boss who doesn’t care about your problems. And who, once he gains such power, will definitely use it. It’s not just that many billions were invested in Cheburnet.

You can, of course, look for workarounds, but the very essence of online self-isolation is to remove all such loopholes. And even if you find a way to bypass the notorious switch, the risk of a visit from a comrade major will only increase – with all the ensuing consequences.

So, I repeat, why all this worry, additional expenses, risks and wasted nerves? And many, having come to a similar conclusion, simply leave for the hills. Into a world without switches and “cheburnet”. Where they are building the future, and not trying to make another version of barbed wire out of fiber-optic cable in order to even more cleverly isolate and weave the country with it.
