Android 15 limits freedom. Pushing users to Google Play

  • Android 15 tries to force users to download only from Google Play
  • The unofficial app loses various features
  • Google says it has user security at heart

The Android operating system is famous for how free it is and how freely it can be used. Individual phone manufacturers have always been able to customize it exactly for their devices, and users have in turn received it freedom of choice to download applications outside the official Google Play Store. But with the arrival of the latest versions of Android, this freedom is increasingly ending and the screws are being tightened.

We could have already encountered this with Android 13, when Google decided to allow users to download applications from an unofficial source, but such an app did not have access to various other functions (for example, it could not – and cannot – use ease of access at all). And the latest Android 15 goes even further in this regard.

If you download any app from Google Store, it will work fully for you. But if you try to bypass this source and download it from somewhere else, you will be in for an unpleasant surprise. The app will only work partially – for example, it will not be possible to make settings with it notification and it will not be possible to set it as default application for calling (or texting). Again, according to Google, it’s just conservation security and thus preventing any malicious malware hidden in the app from reaching the phone.

But the good news is that it will be possible to bypass this ban. You will be able to enable all disabled functions at your own risk. At least for now. But thanks for the news anyway Play Integrity API it may happen that the app will force you to go to Google Play and “legalize” it by re-downloading it from there.

Where do you most often download your apps from?
