If until recently drivers who wanted to listen to music on the radio in their car with the help of Android Auto were ignored by the creators of the application, it seems that Google has plans to improve them.
Ever since it first appeared on the app market 10 years ago, Android Auto has made life easier for drivers. The fact that it can take control of your media and supports apps like YouTube Music and Spotify directly from your smartphone are just some of the advantages. Users can change songs, adjust volume or skip podcasts without touching the control buttons.
Android Auto: What hints we have for the new functionality
Until recently, Android Auto pretended not to “see” the radio in cars. Some drivers can listen to songs or shows on it while Android Auto is on, but have to frequently switch between the app and the vehicle’s software. Which is dangerous while driving, because the driver is no longer paying attention to the road.
Conform 9to5Google, the new versions of the app, i.e. v12.3 and v12.4, contain some interesting information in their codes that seem to indicate support for Car Radio controls. Two things stand out here: HD Radio support and switching between AM and FM bandwidths.
A new app specifically for radio?
Specific details on how Google will implement this functionality are not yet known. A simple shortcut to your car radio may be the solution. The most likely scenario would be a standalone app. Until then we have Android Auto v12.3 and v12.4. The two are available for download in both beta and stable versions in Google Play.
Celebrating 10 years of Android Auto indicates that support for AM, FM and HD radio could become a reality sooner than first thought. It could significantly ease the experience of radio-enthusiast drivers.
