Android is for boomers and poorer people. What else did you not know?

  • Statistics revealed that older users prefer Android
  • 74% of them fall into the middle class or low income
  • It also revealed what apps users prefer

Phones rule the world. And that’s not an exaggerated statement. According to data from last October, he owns a smartphone 4.3 billion people. Now, in addition, statistics have been created that compare how users are doing with the preferences of different operating systems. The essential information is that the mobile world is overwhelmingly dominated by Android, which is found in 72 % of all devices. Right behind it is of course iOS.

But it is especially interesting age distribution users. According to researchers, older people prefer Android phones. It dominates the group of born users before 1964. The youngest, i.e. the so-called generation Z and millennials, prefer iPhones.

What mobile phone you are likely to get, however, depends not only on your age, but also on income. The study shows that 73% of Android mobile phone owners belong to the group middle or low income. However, only 57% of iPhone buyers belong to these income categories (43% of iPhone users have high incomes).

Android’s rapid growth

The researchers were also interested in whether the choice of operating system was somehow related to gender. But it looks like not. The number of male and female Android users is almost identical. In the case of iPhones, they are the owners in 53% of cases women.

The strange thing is that the popularity of Android is growing at a rocket speed. At the beginning of the year 2009 only 2% of users had it on their mobile phone. Today it is in 72% of all devices. The situation is completely different with the iPhone, which in 2009 was on 37% of all mobile phones. And although the youngest generation loves it, today it has a share of only 28% (the latest data comes from the 3rd quarter of 2024).

But the fact is that Android owners are not that loyal to their device. Only 43% of them are willing to keep it at least 2 years (iPhone users keep their phone for at least 2 years in 61% of cases).
