With a constant search for new security features, Google has managed to improve Android. They are not always very visible options or require interaction, but they guarantee user protection. A new one is now being made available and ensures that Android detects malicious apps that collect data without consent.
Google wants an end to malicious apps
Google introduced a new Play Protect feature at I/O in May this year that used on-device AI models. This will protect users from misbehaving and malicious apps. The Live Threat Detection feature is finally rolling out to Android devices, starting with Google's Pixel lineup.
The new functionality will analyze how apps interact with sensitive permissions and other apps and services to identify harmful apps. By detecting suspicious behavior, real-time threat detection will immediately alert users, prompting them to take immediate action to protect devices.
As you can see in the image below, the feature will send a notification when it finds an unsafe app with a link to Play Protect to help users remove the app from their devices. Google claims the feature can identify malicious apps that “go to extra effort to hide their behavior or are inactive for a while before engaging in suspicious activity.”
Android will offer data security
Live threat detection will initially focus on apps that collect personal data without user consent, but Google plans to explore expanding its detection to other types of dark apps in the future.
Google has also ensured that the feature will not collect user data, with on-device AI models analyzing app behavior in a privacy-preserving way through the Private Compute Core.
This live threat detection is now rolling out to Google Play Protect for Pixel 6 and newer models. Devices from other Android manufacturers will also receive the feature in the coming months, thus expanding this security feature to even more users.
