Brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez murdered their parents in their Beverly Hills home in 1989, and were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a second trial.
In the first trial – which was partly televised – the defense argued from the beginning that it was a case of murder in self-defense, and presented reams of evidence and testimony that the sons were physically and mentally abused by their father and that he sexually assaulted them.
This was completely omitted in trial number two – which was not televised – in which the brothers were convicted of murder.
Today is Lyle Menendez 56 years old and his little brother Erik are 53 and they have served their sentences for almost 35 years. During this time, new evidence has emerged and attitudes towards sexual abuse of boys and men have changed.
