Bloomberg reports that Xiaomi is indeed working on a custom smartphone processor, citing sources familiar with the matter. The outlet’s sources added that mass production is expected take place in 2025. The publication suggested that Xiaomi’s expertise in chip manufacturing would also be great for the company’s electric vehicle business.
This news comes nearly a year after we first heard about Xiaomi’s plans for a custom smartphone processor. The CEO of MediaTek Rick Tsai had hinted at a custom Xiaomi chipset as early as January 2024.
Leaker Yogesh Brar published a series of alleged details in August. The tipster claimed that the new Xiaomi chipset will be revealed in first half of 2025 and it will be built on process at 4 nm (N4P) from TSMC. Brar also said that the chip will be comparable to the 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in terms of performance, with a 5G modem from Unisoc.
