Another feature from Google has gone haywire. Canceling it before it was officially released

Engineers working for Google they have many ideas. The company often tries them and is not afraid to introduce something that does not have a 100% chance of success. They had a similar problem when implementing artificial intelligence in search. The results were not ideal, so they had to provide a way to disable the AI. The feature comes from Search Labs

In November 2023 Google Search Labs published an experiment called Notes, i.e. Notes. Search Labs is, as the name suggests, trial online “laboratory” from Google, where users test upcoming features. If the feature doesn’t get a good response, it won’t be released officially. The same fate awaits it unless enough users use it.

If you participated in the experiment (so Google called testing), you could add a note to a search result or an article on the Internet with one button. Alternatively, you could view notes from other users. You were then offered options like Like, Share and Save for later.

It was not an original idea

The whole system resembles Community Notes on the X application, where users can under posts clarify the context, or mark the post as a hoax. At the same time, he also recalled a forum, such as you can find, for example, on Reddit. But it is not a bad principle at all, a similar function is very useful. We live in a time when you need verify information, because anyone can post any misinformation on the Internet. In this way, readers share their experiences and knowledge with each other, or warn others.

Google assumed that Notes would be popular and had high hopes for it. But today we already know that the function will only be available until the end of July and will not progress further from the experimental phase. In an official statement, they claim that Notes was never supposed to be released, it was just a test. Anyway, Google doesn’t want to resent her and will use the idea to future projects.
