While some celebrated the new year with enthusiasm and merriment, some citizens of the American state of Florida were not in the mood to sing. Pornhub, the most visited adult content website in the world and the sixteenth most popular website ever, started the new year by blocking its content in the entire territory of Florida.
According to Pornhub, the driver’s license or ID verification is overkill
He is behind the blanket ban HB 3 Act passed by the Florida Legislature last March. Among other things, it imposes an obligation on websites with pornographic content to introduce mechanisms for verifying the age of users, for example verification with a driver’s or ID card. Site operators face fines of up to $50,000 for non-compliance with the law.
Instead of submitting to these laws, Pornhub’s parent company Aylo decided to fight back and banned the site across Florida. Users there, according to the magazine CBS News when trying to enter the website, the message displays: “As you may know, your elected officials in Florida require us to verify your age before we allow you to access our website. Although safety and compliance are at the forefront of our concern, presenting an ID every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution to protect our users and actually puts children and your privacy at risk.”
The message continues with a request “Please reach out to your representatives before it’s too late and ask for device-based authentication solutions that make the internet safer while respecting your privacy.”
Pornhub launched in 2007 scored according to the site Statesman more than 11.4 billion visits, the vast majority from mobile devices. It’s also fair to say that Florida isn’t the first state where the site is down. Other states where this entertainment content is unavailable include, for example, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina or Utah.
