A guided aerial bomb hit a 12-story residential building in a large city in eastern Ukraine on Friday, which caught fire and partially collapsed, Ukrainian leaders said.
Compared to Friday, the number of fatalities rose from at least six to seven on Saturday, and the number of wounded doubled to at least 97. The latest fatality is a 14-year-old girl, twenty-two minors are among the wounded, said Oleh Szinyehubov, the governor of Kharkiv county.
Kharkiv, which was Ukraine’s second most populous city before the war, lies 30 kilometers from the Russian border and is a frequent target of Russian attacks. The number of clashes on the Ukrainian front increased to 200 in one day, according to the report of the General Staff in Kyiv on Friday. The fiercest fighting took place around Pokrovsk, a strategic hub in Donetsk Oblast, where the Russian army accelerated its advance.
According to officials, the Russian army managed to raise the Russian flag in the long-disputed village of Karlivka. Ukrainian air defense shot down 24 drones out of 52 launched by the Russian army in eight counties, the air force reported on Saturday.
In a statement published on the Telegram messaging application, the Ukrainian Air Force wrote that 25 Shahid drones were shot down, while three others continued to fly towards Russia and Belarus. There were no reports of injuries or more serious material damage. During the night, there was an air raid warning several times due to drone attacks, and people fled to shelters.
In Kiev, where the air raid warning lasted for at least four hours, there were at least four drone attacks this week, local leaders said. All the drones that attacked the city were shot down, no major damage was caused, Kyiv city leaders said.
Ukrainian air defense also shot down drones in central Ukraine’s Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, and Dnipropetrovsk counties, as well as in Chenykhiv and Sumy counties in the north of the country, and Mykolaiv counties in the south.
The Ukrainian Air Force also said that the Russian forces fired five missiles, but did not give further details.
