Another upgrade for the Volvo XC90

The complete electrification of the largest Volvo SUV model should have been well under way. Then the new electric model would replace its predecessor with SUS engines. However, that time has not yet come. That’s why Volvo is once again refreshing its SUV flagship model XC90. Exactly the model that was actually already supposed to be replaced by its electric brother EX90.

In order to make the complete transition to electricity as gentle as possible, the Swedes decided to extend the life of the large XC90. Of course, the connection between the SUS engine and the fully electric drive is Plug-In and light hybrids.

The front gets slimmer Matrix-LED headlights with a new interpretation of Thor’s hammer design. The hood, fenders and air vents adapt to the current design. The grille front fascia is striking. At the rear, there are now darker stop lights.

In general, the classic basic silhouette of the second generation, which has been on the market since 2015, remains intact. Volvo rounds off the exterior refresh with a new wheel design and a new color: “Mulberry Red”.

A little more attention is paid to the interior. Now there’s a new central, freestanding 11.2-inch touchscreen (it was 9 inches in the previous model) with Volvo’s latest user interface, which already works in the EX90 and EX30 models. Also, only simple steps are required to access the most frequently used functions.

In addition, there is a redesigned central tunnel with a “2+1” cup holder, wireless smartphone charging, a newly designed instrument panel, modified air vents and new seat upholstery materials. Volvo, as with the EX30 model, uses sustainable materials “Bio-Material Nordico” here.

Volvo has also made technical changes to make the large SUV more dynamic to drive. The mild-hybrid versions of the B5 and B6 have been upgraded with the new Miller combustion cycle, which further improves their efficiency. The front axle now gets double wishbone suspension.

The new integral connection on the rear axle should provide greater stability when towing a trailer. The standard suspension now comes with frequency selective damping (FSD) for greater ride comfort. Also, thanks to the improved sound insulation, the ride should be quieter and more comfortable.

The Volvo XC90 will be available as a T8 eAWD Plug-in-Hybrid with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, e-Boost and turbocharging, as well as a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a maximum power of 220 kW (310 hp) plus 107 kW (145 hp) electric motor. Energy will be stored in a triple lithium-ion battery of 14.7 kWh (net), which should be charged in three hours on an AC charger.

Also on offer is a mild-hybrid four-cylinder gasoline engine with variable turbo charging and a power of 184 kW (250 hp).
