ANWB: fast charging is often more favorable abroad

Holidaymakers who travel by electric car are best off with fast charging, the association says. The research is based on the charging behavior of 230,000 Dutch customers during the last summer holidays. Abroad, fast charging is not much more expensive than slow charging, unlike in the Netherlands. Dutch charging cards work on almost all fast chargers, while this is not always the case with slow charging stations abroad. The fast charging network has also expanded enormously in many European countries in recent years, says the ANWB. Fast charging in France and Spain appears to be cheaper than a regular charging station. Charging the electric car is cheapest in Norway, both slow and fast charging. This is the most expensive in Switzerland and slow charging is more than twice as expensive as in Norway. Prices therefore differ per country and even per charging station. One of the causes is the blocking rate, a time-based rate that is on top of the electricity rate for the duration of charging. Sometimes the counter starts immediately, sometimes only after two hours. That rate is sometimes also available at fast charging stations, but because they are mainly located at places such as gas stations or supermarkets, the car is not often left on there all night. This is often the case in residential areas.
