Apple AirTag 2 Coming Soon with Improved Features

According to Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple source, we will see a new AirTag model. The AirTag tracking device, which has been in our lives for about 3 years, will be replaced by a much better model.

Gurman states that the new model will come with a more advanced chip, likely the second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip recently seen in the iPhone 15. This updated technology is expected to improve the accuracy of AirTag’s location tracking.

The original AirTag features Apple’s U1 chip, which uses UWB technology along with Bluetooth to connect to Apple’s Find My network, allowing users to locate their devices with precision. Its stainless steel body is compact and lightweight, offering IP67 water and dust resistance, providing some protection against the elements.

The device also has a small built-in speaker that helps users locate their AirTag by making a sound when activated via the Find My app. The back cover is removable, allowing users to replace the battery when necessary.

The AirTag can be tracked on a map using the Find My app. Additionally, the app uses ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope capabilities to provide more detailed guidance with audio, haptic feedback, and visual directions.

In cases where the AirTag is lost, it can be put into Lost Mode, which notifies the user when it is found or comes within range. If another person finds the AirTag, they can touch it with an NFC-enabled device and view the owner’s contact information, if available.

Apple has integrated privacy features into the AirTag to prevent unwanted tracking. For example, the Bluetooth signal identifiers used by AirTag rotate frequently to prevent monitoring by unauthorized parties, and communications within the Find My network are encrypted end-to-end.

The upcoming AirTag is also said to integrate with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, but specific details about this feature remain unclear. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said last year that production of the AirTag had been delayed until 2025, but confirmed that both he and Gurman were expecting a release next year. There are no signs of any design changes for now.
