The iPhone SE is the “budget” variant of Apple’s phones, and the fourth generation is expected to arrive later this year or in early 2025. So far, rumors have indicated that the iPhone SE 4 will be based on the iPhone 14, but we information suggests that it will be more similar to a more recent model: the iPhone 16, which has not yet been released.
The new information comes from the Chinese social network Weibo, where leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims that the iPhone SE 4 will have the “exactly same” rear case as the iPhone 16. This information directly contradicts previous rumors: in late 2023, sources close to the process of Apple’s manufacturing staff said that the dimensions of the iPhone SE 4 perfectly matched those of the iPhone 14.
There are several possible explanations for this change, assuming of course that this information leak is correct. The first is that Apple could have decided it’s more economical to use some of the same materials and manufacturing processes for the SE as the iPhone 16. With the iPhone 14’s days numbered, it makes sense for the manufacturer to standardize on a more recently.
The iPhone SE 4 could be based on the upcoming iPhone 16
The more interesting explanation, however, is that the change could be caused by the iPhone SE 4 getting a better camera system than previously predicted. The new iPhone 16 appears to be getting a significantly different camera assembly this time around, and the fact that Apple is using the same rear housing for that phone and the SE 4 could indicate that Apple is considering a significant camera upgrade for the SE this time around date.
Other rumored changes include replacing Touch ID with Face ID and adding a notch to the display, and the new design will also mean a larger screen: 6.1 inches, compared to the current model’s 4.7 inches.
USB-C is a certainty, and an Action button, similar to the one on the iPhone 15 Pro, is also rumored. But with all these changes, Apple still plans to launch the new phone at a price similar to the current model, notes T3.com.
