We keep remembering that we used to write very regular articles where we actually analyzed their constant struggle many phone manufacturers to continuously reduce the bezels on each of their new devices. After consumers stopped caring so much about bezel size (which happened around the same time we stopped referring to large-screen phones as “phablets”), bezel size came back into the discussion, at least if the issue are iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Both 2024 premium iPhone models will be officially unveiled on Monday, September 9, and a previously leaked schematic showed bezel size of only 1.15 mm for iPhone 16 Pro Max. Samsung Display has admitted that it’s working on a product that supports under-display cameras that remove all bezels from a phone. This year, Apple is using a technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS) to reduce the size of the bezels on its most expensive phones.
Bloomberg News’ chief correspondent, who focuses on Apple and other major technology, Mark Gurman, reports that the size of the bezels of the iPhone 16 Pro will be about 33% smaller than the bezels of the iPhone 15 Pro. Additionally, the screen size will be larger as both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max get a 0.2-inch increase in screen size to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively. According to a roadmap released by Ice Universe in July, the iPhone 17 will increase in screen size to 6.3 inches, and the iPhone Air, which is rumored to replace the iPhone 17 Plus, is expected to be equipped with a 6.7 screen inches.
By the way, we see that in the last two years, the size of the bezels on the iPhone Pro model has been significantly reduced starting with the 3.5mm bezels on the iPhone 14 Pro that have shrunk to around 2mm on the iPhone 15 Pro. If Gurman is right with his math skills, we could see bezels between 1.3mm and 1.4mm for the iPhone 16 Pro. It should be noted that among Apple beat reporters, Gurman is considered to have some of the “deepest sources” in Cupertino.
