Apple iPhone 16 Pro & 16 Pro Max: Bigger, Better, Faster… smarter!

There is no doubt that the “big” iPhone is always the one that gathers the most attention and this happened once again. Apple wanted to create a premium flagship that is a “lobster” of AI functions, in its attempt to prove that it also owns the sport of Artificial Intelligence. The new iPhone 16 & 16 Pro Max are expected to act as a gateway to the era of mobile-based Artificial Intelligence as envisioned by Apple and fatefully Apple Intelligence is at the core of their operation (with Apple even noting that the better IT experience will come with the new “big” iPhones).

Undoubtedly, compared to their smaller siblings, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which are basically similar to last year’s version, the new iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have many changes, making this release one of the most important in recent years as claimed by Apple itself.

Major changes with… surgical precision!

Taking a closer look at the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, it is obvious that Apple has not made world-historical changes in the philosophy of design and quality of materials. Investing again in “invulnerable” strength, the large iPhone 16 series have a robust frame reinforced by titanium, while the back is a combination of glass and matte surface. The area of the Dynamic Island dominates the front part, while at the same time the Action Button that we met in last year’s version of the device is not absent from the shape.

And if we don’t have the element of surprise in the design and (always high) build quality, the big change in this year’s iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max lies in the existence of larger screens. In particular, the iPhone 16 Pro Max now has a 6.9-inch screen (instead of 6.7), while the smaller iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, an improvement from the 6.1 inches of the previous version. This increase is achieved thanks to thinner bezels. In fact, at this point it is worth adding that Apple increased the screen without significantly increasing the dimensions of the devices. Specifically, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is just 3.1mm taller than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and 0.88mm wider, while the iPhone 16 Pro is 3mm taller and 0.85mm wider than the iPhone 15 Pro. Both new iPhones are 8.25mm thick and weigh a few grams more than before.

An important innovation has to do with the camera control button, which you will find on the right side of Apple’s new Premium flagship, just below the Power button. If nothing else, this pleasant addition puts more multifunctional control in the hands of the user, and in particular is a convenient solution for fans of mobile photography and content creation, as the button in question returns a number of camera functions (such as is focus, record video, zoom, take photo, adjust aperture, etc.).

The screens remain Liquid Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion technology for smooth refresh at 120Hz. Both phones have USB Type-C ports and IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro have the same camera setup, with a 48MP primary camera. Both phones have a new 48MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.4 aperture, a significant upgrade from the 12MP ultra-wide used by previous models. On the telephoto lens, both phones feature a 5X tetraprism telephoto lens, replacing the older 3X telephoto lens.

Performance, autonomy and… Apple Intelligence!

As Apple pointed out in the context of its September launch event, at the heart of the Pro and Pro Max models is the Apple A18, which is expected to be a real “beast” in terms of performance! It has a 16-core Neural Engine unit, with Apple stating that AI functions will run up to 20% faster than on the iPhone 15 Pro. Of course, the upgraded and powerful chipset is expected to handle all the work related to Artificial Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence aspiring to change the way we perceive a mobile device and how it works. It is even worth noting that A18 Pro offers 50% faster processing for Apple Intelligence compared to the previous A17 Pro.

With the arrival of iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence will bring new features such as writing tools, automatic notifications, photo cleaning, image search and digital image creation. In fact, having by default support for the Artificial Intelligence grid that Apple promises us, the latest Apple models will also include a new feature that will be identical to Google Lens and will be related to the use of the new Camera Button. Users of the new iPhone will be able to take photos of signs and objects to instantly get information about those places and things.

The iPhone 16 Pro has a larger battery and in fact, in their presentation, it was officially commented that they have “the best battery life we’ve ever seen on an iPhone”. The fact that the new phones are powered by the A18 Pro chip, which is an upgraded version of the A18 found in the regular iPhone 16, certainly plays a role in this.

Price & Release Date

The new devices come in gold-titanium, white, black and titanium shade. For the avoidance of doubt, the new gold-titanium is what replaces last year’s blue-titanium that we had on last year’s 15 Pro. At launch, the new iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max at $1,199. They come in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB sizes. On this part Apple showed a consistency to its audience: the iPhone 15 Pro was priced at $999 with 128GB of storage, while the 15 Pro Max was $1,199 with 256GB of storage.
