Apple continues to dominate the US smartphone market, a latest quarterly market share report from Counterpoint Research reveals. The Cupertino-based company has 53% of the total market pie there for the third quarter of this year (July to September), with Samsung in second place with a 23% share.
In third place was Lenovo, which, let’s not forget, also owns Motorola and has a share of 14%, which actually belongs to Motorola’s phone sales. The next company on the list is surprisingly HMD, but it managed to get just 1% market share. “Others” represent only 9%. We can’t think of a more polarized market than this one, where one player has more than half the pie and only two other companies matter.
As you can see from the image above, Apple’s market share has remained stable for the past three quarters after a peak in Q4 of last year, and the second and third quarters of 2023 were also roughly at the same point as now. That’s surprisingly consistent performance, we must say. On the other hand, Samsung fell from its peak of 31% in Q1 2024 and Lenovo/Motorola had its best quarter of 2024.
The overall market was down 6% in the third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2023. So Apple’s actual shipments (not market share) were down 5% year over year. Samsung’s shipments were down 13% year-over-year, while Motorola achieved a 21% year-over-year increase “primarily due to improved prepaid performance from the Moto G Play 2024.”
