After three years, Apple is about to significantly revive its affordable iPhone line. The successor to the current iPhone SE should be introduced already in Marchwhile according to the latest reports it could bear a completely new designation. Instead of the expected “iPhone SE 4”, there is talk of an “iPhone 16E” variant.
The Fixed Focus Digital account on the Chinese social network Weibo, which has over two million followers, came up with this information. At the end of December, he was also followed by the well-known leaker Majin Bu. Whether it will be a variant with a capital “E”, a small “e” or even an SE is not yet clear. It’s also possible that this is just a working designation and Apple will end up sticking with the established SE brand.
iPhone 14-like design and Face ID support
New the affordable iPhone is supposed to be based on the design of the basic iPhone 14. This means that for the first time we will see a larger 6.1-inch OLED display with a cutout for Face ID. The current generation SE still uses a small 4.7-inch LCD panel with large bezels and a fingerprint sensor in the Home button.
A big shift is also expected in the camera – it is supposed to be mounted on the back 48 Mpx main sensor, while the selfie gets a 12 Mpx resolution. The latest chipset of the series will not be missing either A18 along with 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence features. The interesting thing is that it should be the first iPhone with its own 5G modem from Apple.
Higher price for better equipment
The current iPhone SE starts at $429 in the US. The new generation is expected to increase in price by 70 dollars per $499 (converted to about CZK 12,200). However, due to the significant shift in the equipment, this is not a dramatic increase – the difference compared to the basic iPhone 16, on the contrary, should amount to a full 300 dollars. To give you an idea of the Czech price, Apple currently sells the basic iPad in a version with 256GB storage for the same $499, which costs CZK 14,490 in our country. It can therefore be expected that the new iPhone SE/16E will also be at this price level.
In addition to the processor, the new “E” borrows the size of the RAM and the main camera from the iPhone 16. Looking at the price, the absence of an ultra-wide lens or a more massive frame around the display may not bother you so much, although the equipment is rather poor compared to competing Androids. None of the current manufacturers use only one sensor in their better phones. On the other hand, it must be admitted that the main sensor is capable of a very good 2x cut-out, which can fit more than one dedicated telephoto lens of the upper middle class.
