Apple is slowly phasing out USB-A ports. The new Mac mini will have five USB-C instead

Such optical drives disappeared from Macbooks long before others gradually decided to take this step. Now it looks like the end of USB-A for Apple, which is to be expected in the world of computers, but for a significantly longer time.

According to Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman, the upcoming generation of the Mac mini with the M4 processor will no longer have any classic USB (USB-A) ports. Instead of them, there will be a total of five USB-C, three at the back and two at the front. Other connectivity options include HDMI, Ethernet and a 3.5mm jack – not all older Apple connectors stink.

The USB-A connector has not been found on any new Macbook for some time now. The last one was apparently the Macbook Air from 2017. It disappeared from the Macbook Pro even earlier, and then, on the contrary, the problem was a small number of USB-C.

Mac Studio and Mac Pro desktops, however, still have the classic rectangular USB, even though USB-C already predominates here as well. But they may lose them as soon as next year, when their upgrade is expected. Older peripherals will then have to be connected, for example, via a reducer.
