Apple is two years behind the competition in terms of AI technology

Contrary to what Apple claims in its marketing campaigns, there are some company employees who believe that the company’s internal AI technology that powers the service Apple Intelligence it is two years behind the industry leaders. The information was conveyed by Mark Gurman through his new publication.

Writing in its latest Power On newsletter, Gurman’s sources close to Apple say that the company’s own studies suggest that its upcoming AI features lack the “wow factor” of rival technologies currently offered by companies such as Google, OpenAI and Meta.

For example, internal studies at Apple reportedly show that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is 25% more reliable than the new Siri and can answer 30% more questions. Of course, Apple has already conceded as much, given that part of its strategy includes a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT in its operating systems, giving users the option to tap into greater genetic AI assistance if they so desire.

Despite all the setbacks, Gurman notes that Apple is in the unique position of presiding over a vast ecosystem of tightly integrated devices, which gives it the advantage of being able to quickly roll out new technologies across its entire product line. That could prove beneficial as the company works to close the AI gap with its rivals, and its history of successfully entering new markets suggests it shouldn’t be counted out.

Apple’s latest iPhone 16 range supports Apple Intelligence, as do its Macs and iPad range (with the exception of the entry-level model) following the announcement of the iPad mini 7 last week. The first set of AI features is expected to roll out to these devices next week (not in Europe).
