Apple is updating its AI feature after it issued fake news notifications

The tech company said it is developing a software update that will “clarify” whether news notifications are actually summaries generated by the company’s Apple Intelligence system. It said the update will roll out in the coming weeks.

It follows a formal complaint lodged by the BBC last month after news alerts marked with the publication’s logo informed some iPhone users that Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, had shot himself. Mangione is alive and being held at a prison in Brookyln.

Fake news alerts were sounded again on Friday when Apple’s AI system digested the BBC’s app notifications and mistakenly reported that Nadal had come out as gay. The summaries also claimed that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship, hours before the competition started.

“These AI summaries produced by Apple do not reflect – and in some cases completely contradict – the original content produced by the BBC. It is essential that Apple resolves these issues as a matter of urgency, as the accuracy of our news is essential to maintaining trust,” the BBC said.
