Apple lost a lawsuit in Ireland and has to pay 13 billion euros
Europe’s highest court ruled against Apple on Tuesday at the end of a 10-year trial that targeted the tech giant’s Irish business, according to CNBC.
The statement of the European Court of Justice comes a few hours after Apple unveiled a series of new products, trying to revitalize the range of iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPod.
In 2014, the European Commission opened an investigation into Apple’s tax payments in Ireland, the tech giant’s headquarters in the EU. In 2016, the Commission ordered Dublin to recover up to €13 billion, saying at the time that Apple received “illegal” tax benefits in Ireland over two decades.
Apple and Ireland appealed the Commission’s decision in 2019, and in 2020 the EU’s second-highest court overturned the Commission’s 2016 decision.
For its part, the Commission challenged the decision of the Tribunal, sending the dispute to the ECJ.
