Apple has redesigned the internal layout of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, making battery replacements much easier. The company’s official press release says the devices have been “redesigned” to make battery replacements easier for service, as well as to improve performance and heat dissipation.
During the launch event, Apple focused on the new iPhone 16 design, which promotes faster and more consistent performance, 9to5Mac reports. “We combined the powerful performance and efficiency of the A18 chip with new system optimizations, including thermal design. We updated the logic board, centralizing the chip layout and optimizing the surrounding architecture. We also added a thermal substructure made from 100% recycled aluminum to help dissipate heat. As a result, iPhone 16 now delivers better performance, including better gaming,” the company said.
Apple has previously reported plans to make it easier to replace iPhone batteries using a new electrically induced peel-off technology. It is unclear whether Apple has used this technology in the iPhone 16. This will become clear later when the first teardowns of the new devices appear.
Notably, this change comes as the European Union plans to introduce a new rule in 2025 that will force Apple to make it easier to replace iPhone batteries. There are a number of exceptions that could ultimately determine whether this regulation impacts Apple, but the company has made the change in the iPhone 16 now.
