The collaboration between Apple and TSMC opens a new era in American chip manufacturing.
Apple will soon begin mass production of its first US-made A-series chips, which will be produced at TSMC’s Arizona plant, reported the Nikkei Asia. According to the report, test production of the chips at the new TSMC plant near Phoenix has already been completed, and Apple is now conducting final checks on quality and performance.
If the quality assurance processes go smoothly, the first commercial chips could be ready this quarter.
The plant primarily produces A-series chips for Apple devices, especially older iPhone models. According to a previous report, the Arizona facility will produce the A16 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, as well as the S9 chip in the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The start of mass production is a milestone, as it will be the first time Apple’s silicon chips are manufactured in the United States.
The move is a major milestone for Apple, which has made long-term goals to diversify its supply chain and relocate some manufacturing capacity back to the United States. The Arizona plant is part of a broader industry effort to revive local chip manufacturing, which is supported by the US government to increase supply chain stability.
