Apple Maps Delivers New Ways to Explore the World

Starting today, app users can explore hiking trails in U.S. national parks, create their own hiking routes, save favorite places to the new library, and more

With today’s launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple Maps is bringing new features that make it easier to find and explore great places. “Apple Maps is the best way to explore and discover the world, and we’re excited to make today’s updates even better,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “Maps makes planning trips easy and fun with the beautiful, useful, and precise experience that only Apple can deliver.”

Detailed national park trails and topographic maps

Users can now explore thousands of trails across America’s national parks on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch—from Acadia National Park in Maine to Yosemite in California to Denali National Park in Alaska. When choosing a route, users can filter trails by type, length, or elevation gain, then navigate with turn-by-turn navigation to help them stay on track. Users can download routes for offline use, and save them to Apple Watch. Also, starting today, Maps will offer shuttle schedules for select national parks, including Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah and Sequoia National Park in California.

Topographic maps for the United States and Japan are also available on iPhone and Apple Watch, with plenty of detail, including contour lines and trail details.

Your own walking routes

For the first time, Maps users from different countries and regions around the world can create and save their own hiking and walking routes. Users can customize routes to their preferences, whether they want to go for a long walk in a new city or explore nearby natural treasures. Both national park trails and custom routes can be viewed away from cellular or Wi-Fi networks and synced to Apple Watch.

New Places Library and Improved Search Options

It’s easier than ever before to save your favorite places and discover new attractions. On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, users can save places, curated Maps guides, national park trails, and custom routes to the new Places Library and add notes to each location. Improved search features let users quickly discover and compare places by browsing photos, reviews, prices, and more without leaving Search. The new “Search Here” button in the Maps app lets users search for specific places, such as restaurants, coffee shops, or gas stations, in a specific area.
