Apple Music has teamed up with luxury publisher Assouline to create a unique book: “Apple Music: 100 Best Albums”. Available for pre-order, this work will be delivered from November 29 and is distinguished by its limited edition of only 1,500 copies. The price, although high at $450, does not seem to deter fans, because this book is primarily aimed at music enthusiasts and collectors of beautiful objects.
A collector’s book for wealthy music fans
This imposing book is housed in a transparent acrylic case engraved with a unique edition number for each copy. The linen cover, the gilded edges and the illustrations make it an object of art in itself, designed to sit proudly on the shelves. Interesting fact: although the selection covers 100 albums, only 97 illustrations are included. A touch of mystery which adds to the not very discreet charm of this work (it still weighs 3.6 kg).
The selection of albums is not based on streaming statistics but on a carefully considered editorial choice by the Apple Music teams and influential music personalities, such as Pharrell Williams and Charli XCX. There we find masterpieces like “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis, released in 1959, to “Un Verano Sin Ti” by Bad Bunny, in 2022. Crossing decades and genres as varied as the jazz, rock, pop and hip-hop, this list of 100 albums reflects a wide range of notable musical creations.
« If our list sparks passionate discussions among music fans, then we will have accomplished our mission, » explains Zane Lowe, creative director at Apple Music. Each album is accompanied by explanatory notes detailing its cultural and artistic significance, reinforcing the idea that these works are much more than collected pieces: they want to capture moments of life, emotions and ideas. For Zane Lowe, “ great albums become a part of you, of your personal history ».
This is not Apple’s first attempt. In 2016, the brand had already surprised by launching “Designed by Apple in California”, an elegant work tracing the evolution of the design of its products. The $199 and $299 prices had already sparked debate, much like today with this new Apple Music book. But this time, the target is more specific: music fans ready to invest in a unique and limited piece.
