Apple: Refreshed iPad mini with A17 Pro chipset, twice the storage and Wi-Fi 6E

Simple, simple and unnecessary, Apple announced its new iPad mini (2024) through a Press Release. It’s one of the smallest updates in iPad history with a major addition the Apple A17 Pro chipset which debuted on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Practically, what we are able to know is that the new mini replaces the 2021 model and will be ready to receive support from Apple Intelligence when it begins rolling out with iPadOS 18.1 later this month.

Beyond the more modern chipset, this new mini features 128GB of onboard storage (up from 64GB) and updated connectivity with support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and a faster USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2 port. It also adds support for the Apple Pencil Pro stylus and comes in a new blue color that joins Purple, Starlight and Space Grey.

The rest of the specifications are identical to the previous model, such as an 8.3-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1,488 x 2,266 pixels and an aspect ratio of 3:2. The refresh rate is still limited to 60Hz, as Apple continues to keep ProMotion (120Hz) for owners of iPad Pro models. The pair of 12MP cameras are also carried over from the previous generation mini, but have the added benefit of improved ISP thanks to the newer processor with Smart HDR 4 support.

Good old Touch ID for biometric unlocks and app purchases is also left, as is the same 19.3 watt-hour battery that Apple claims will last you 10 hours of browsing or watching videos over Wi-Fi. The retail package includes a 20W USB-C power adapter.

Apple is also launching a new Smart Folio case for $59.
