Apple secretly worked with BYD to develop batteries for its electric car

Even though it has scrapped plans for its electric car, Apple has reportedly been working alongside BYD to develop new battery technologies.

Over the years there has been countless speculations regarding a possible electric car that Apple was developing. The American giant reportedly spent about $10 billion over a decade on that project, which it abandoned earlier this year.

A new report shows that Apple has been working with China’s BYD for years to develop batteries for electric cars, reports Carscoops.

Although the technology never ended up being used in an Apple-branded vehicle, the partnership between the two companies gave BYD an advantage in the development of electric battery technologies.

Apple and BYD started working together in 2017 and built a battery system using lithium iron phosphate cells. The report says that Apple engineers working on the project had experience with advanced batteries and temperature management, while BYD used its lithium iron phosphate cell manufacturing skills and manufacturing facilities to make this partnership work.

Apple and BYD began their collaboration after the Chinese carmaker’s engineers showed early versions of the Blade battery to Apple executives. This is currently used in its series electric vehicles.

The American company was impressed and thought it could use BYD cells with its own internal battery pack design. Apple thought it could customize and improve the Blade’s battery to increase the range of its own electric vehicle.

Despite these, Apple left the partnership and looked for other technical solutions. Earlier this year, Apple decided to completely end the iCar project.
