Those affected can receive compensation of $20 per device.
Apple is very fond of advertising its own products under the banner of data security, which has proven to be a successful marketing strategy. According to the tech giant, no confidential information can leave the memory of our devices manufactured by them, but in the meantime, a lawsuit is spinning against them because Siri activated itself for no reason, and the conversations it eavesdropped on ended up in the hands of a third party.
Even in 2019, the The Guardian it came to his attention that contract employees of a quality assurance team were able to listen to the audio recorded by Siri. Apple’s assistant activated itself without the knowledge of their owners and, among other things, recorded “confidential medical data, details of drug deals, and the sounds of sexual intercourse.” Siri would only be able to hear these if the user deliberately woke her up with the command “hey Siri”, but in this case, that did not happen.
Due to the recording of audio materials without reason and falling into the hands of a third party, Apple has become involved in a serious legal case, which it now wants to close with a 95 million dollar settlement. In the United States, Judge Jeffrey White of the first instance accepted the terms of the agreement, as a result of which everyone involved may be entitled to compensation of $20 per device. Those affected can apply for this money by referring to a maximum of five devices, and must declare under oath that Siri has been activated without their knowledge and listened to their private conversations.
Apple is not the first company to be involved in such a case – Google is currently trying to resolve a similar lawsuit, because their virtual assistant activated itself without using target words.
