Apple Wants to Bring More Content to Apple TV+, Here’s How

Apple is reportedly in talks to license new films from major Hollywood studios to bolster Apple TV+ offerings da Bloomberg.

Apple TV+ has historically focused on originals for its streaming service, but it is now looking to expand its catalog by acquiring titles from the vast libraries of established studios. Sources close to the company say that despite the success of original series like “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show,” Apple TV+ has failed to compete with the deeper catalogs of competitors like Netflix and Disney+.

Launched in November 2019, Apple TV+ positioned itself as a premium service with high-quality programming and all-original content. Despite numerous critical acclaim and awards, including 72 Emmy nominations this year, Apple TV+ Didn’t Reach the Same Subscriber Base of its competitors. According to research firm MoffettNathanson, only 11% of U.S. households use Apple TV+, compared to 55% for Netflix. The limited content availability on Apple TV+ is seen as a significant factor contributing to its slower growth.

To address this challenge, Apple has already begun experimenting with licensing. Earlier this year, the company acquired about 50 films from Hollywood studios, adding popular titles like “Mean Girls” and “Titanic” to its U.S. catalog. The positive reception to this first batch of licensed films has encouraged Apple to pursue additional deals. These deals are aimed at getting even more titles, potentially expanding the service’s offerings outside of the U.S.

At the same time, major studios like Warner Bros., Discovery, and Disney are becoming increasingly open to selling their content to rivals to increase revenue. This creates a unique opportunity for Apple TV+ to rapidly expand its catalog and reduce cancellation rates, following the successful model of platforms like Netflix.
