The straps of future Apple Watches could have sensors built in to measure, for example, your blood pressure or breathing. This is evident from a number of new patents from Apple.
Apple has a series of notable ones this week patents assigned by the US Patent Office. Several of the patents cover techniques intended for a “smart health and communications band for the Apple Watch and a future headset.” It is a stretchy fabric strap that can contain sensors for measuring all kinds of health matters, such as blood pressure and breathing, and making heart traces (ECGs).
Also possible in clothing
When developing the smart strap, Apple does not limit itself to a combination with the Apple Watch, because a strap for another wearable device, such as the Vision Pro glasses, is also possible. According to the patents, the technology can also be incorporated into “a headband, a hat, underwear, a shirt, pants, yoga clothes, a belt, a sock or a glove.”
One of the inventors named in the Apple patents is Daniel Podhajny. He previously worked for Nike on the Flyknit fabric for the uppers of running, basketball and football shoes.
Wireless charging
The smart band can get electronic parts along the fabric for wireless charging and to communicate wirelessly with other devices. This indicates the possibility of connecting the smart bands to the iPhone, AirPods or MacBook. Apple has previously applied for patents for smart fabrics, including a touch-sensitive smart textile.
