Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleged that some of its devices – particularly its Siri voice assistant – were listening to people without their permission and sharing information with advertisers so they could target their ads with keywords.

In the preliminary agreement, the technology company denies any wrongdoing. reminds BBC. Apple’s lawyers also say the company can provide confirmation that it has “permanently deleted individual Siri audio recordings collected by Apple before October 2019.”

But the plaintiffs allege that the tech company recorded people who inadvertently activated the virtual assistant without consent. For example, plaintiff Fumiko Lopez and her daughter are confident that Air Jordans advertisements began to appear in their gadgets precisely after they talked about the product.

As part of the settlement in the class action, which will be finally decided on February 14, the corporation will pay each plaintiff up to $20 for each Siri-enabled device he owned between 2014 and 2019.

By agreeing to the settlement, Apple not only remains free to publicly deny wrongdoing, but also avoids the risk of a lawsuit that could potentially lead to much larger payouts.

Apple has been involved in a number of class action lawsuits in recent years. In January 2024, she began paying compensation for the claim in the amount of $500 millionwhich claimed it was intentionally slowing down iPhones in the US. In March she also agreed pay $490 million in a class action brought by Norfolk County Council in the UK.
