In recent days, many iPhone users around the world have started to report to have received refunds for AppleCare+ on devices purchased and subsequently returned through the program trade-in of Apple, even after years. The situation is unusual, as there appears to be no specific event that triggered these refunds, and the cases vary greatly.
The refunds are affecting several iPhone models around the world, including iPhones iPhone 11 Pro they iPhone 14 Pro. Users receive an official email from Apple informing them of the refund, like this example:
Dear Customer,
Our records indicate that you are eligible for a refund associated with your AppleCare+ contract (number) for the iPhone 12 Pro Max that you returned or traded in.
We have issued a refund of $201.47 to the payment method associated with your Apple account. Please allow up to 30 days for the transaction to complete.
For questions or assistance, contact Apple Support.
What makes this situation even more particular is the variability of the amounts reimbursed. Some users are reporting much higher refunds than they should have received. For example, AppleCare+ for Pro models costs $199 in the US for two years of standard coverage or $269 for theft and loss protection. However, in one documented case, a user received $201.47 despite his usage period being very long.
Others have received significant refunds even after signing up for a monthly plan, which is puzzling as to the origin of these calculations. In other cases, however, the refunds were just a few dollars.
