“Apply the stamps by hand to the 1,000 copies”

Damien Magnette, drummer and singer, launched the idea of this group made up of mentally disabled musicians in 2007. Their new album, between post-punk and avant-garde, could not be satisfied with a banal cover.

Confined

“The album was created during Covid. So I wanted to represent this state of confinement on the cover. Mathieu Morin, the graphic designer, created the White Classical Music Ensemble typography and had the idea of putting a sticker “confined” on the word “together”. Which reflected the situation well because we were no longer together, but confined. We were thinking of putting stickers of different colors for the 1,000 vinyls. But, speaking with JB, the founder of our label, we said to ourselves that it would be great if there was something, a word for example, added by hand on each cover.

The tampons

“Mathieu created a space in the middle of the cover for the band members to add something. We are led by Wit.h, an association in Kortrijk which works in social-artistic matters, and we asked them for help to create this visual. Rather than drawing by hand, I had the idea of using a stamp system. This way, we can ensure graphic consistency for all copies, and at the same time have something a little wild and different each time. It is the Bruterei collective which depends on the association which was responsible for creating the drawings and Geert Opsomer designed the stamps.

The faces

“These drawings were made by three members of the collective, including Johan Geenens, flautist in the group. I had this idea of faces linked to confinement, and JB brought the more abstract side with these flat areas of color. We selected drawings that Geert turned into stamps using a computer-controlled drill, which allows for very precise cutting.”

L’atelier

“We had to apply the stamps by hand to each of the 1,000 copies, a big undertaking. Six people worked on it for three days. You can see photos of all the bags drying on our Facebook page. I find it quite brilliant that each one is special. I also really like the contrast between computer-designed graphics and something much more raw. This represents the sound of this album well, where there is really precise work on the production and at the same time a great wildness.”
