This is what Cleopatra might have looked like.
According to archaeologists, a small marble bust decorated with a royal crown may capture the true form of Cleopatra VII, the last queen of Egypt. But some archaeologists disagree.e.
A team of scientists from the Dominican Republic and Egypt led by archaeologist Kathleen Martinez was excavating the ancient city of Taposiris Magna near Alexandria, Egypt. During them, the team discovered a small marble bust that fits in the palm of your hand, as well as other objects, such as 337 coins, many of them with the likeness of Cleopatra VII. They also discovered oil lamps, a bronze ring dedicated to the goddess of love and fertility Hathor, a limestone bust of the king and an amulet in the form of a scarab with the inscription “The justice of the god Ra has shone” – Ra was the sun god in ancient Egypt, Live Science explains.
All objects were found near each other and formed the so-called the foundation deposit of the temple, according to the statement of the Egyptian ministry. Ancient Egyptians routinely buried objects before beginning the construction of significant buildings. It is these buried objects that are referred to as the foundation deposit, Live Science explains.
However, some archaeologists disagree with Martinez’s opinion that the discovered bust is an image of Cleopatra VII. Well-known archaeologist and former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, who did not participate in the excavations, but has examined the site in the past, identified the bust as an object dating back to the time of Cleopatra’s reign. He added that the statuette has Roman features and may resemble a Roman princess or other high-ranking woman.
Cleopatra VII. it belonged to the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, which was founded in 305 BC by Ptolemy I. Sotér, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Cleopatra lived from 69 to 30 BC and was the last independently ruling queen of Egypt. Among other things, she is also known for having seduced Gaius Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. After her death, Egypt became a Roman province and the Roman period began, which ended with the division of the empire in 395 AD into the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, later known as the Byzantine Empire. From 395 to 641, Egypt was part of the Byzantine Empire until Alexandria was conquered by the Rashid Caliphate.
