ARD ends SD broadcast: What viewers need to know now

Only in HD

From January 7th, the ARD channels can only be received in HD. SD broadcasting is stopped. That has consequences.

On January 7th, ARD will stop broadcasting in SD quality via satellite, as will the third programs, including WDR, NDR, MDR and BR. At the same time, cable network operators are also ending SD transmission of these channels. From this date, the ARD and third party programs will only be available in HD quality.

Viewers can usually find out whether their television reception at home is affected directly in the TV program: a display indicates the change and asks them to switch to the HD version of the channel. The basic requirement for receiving HD channels is an HD-capable device. Most current Smart TVs as well as many TVs from previous years offer this function.

A simple channel search is usually sufficient to receive HD channels. Many devices already have the HD versions of the programs in the channel list, but often in the lower positions. In this case, users have to manually delete the SD programs and sort the HD programs accordingly. If a television is not HD-capable, an additional HD receiver is required that converts the signal accordingly.

The ARD justifies this Switching off the SD programs with an increasing spread of HD devices and the aim of using transmission resources more efficiently. HD quality not only offers viewers better image resolution, but also optimizes the use of modern televisions.
