On January 7, 2025, ARD will stop broadcasting its SD programs via Astra 19.2 degrees East. As of November 13th, the shutdown notices were intensified.
Which programs are affected?
As already reported, the SD simulcast of all ARD programs will soon be discontinued. This affects the SD variants of the first and third television programs including all local versions of BR, SWR, HR, SR, RB, WDR, NDR, MDR and rbb. Of course, these programs remain freely available to receive in HD via Astra.
What’s new?
Since November 13th, all channels affected by the shutdown have been marked in the channel list with an “old” in front. The information box that appears for a few seconds after each channel change also contains the message: “Attention! You watch TV in SD”. In addition, the switch-off instructions can now also be found in the EPG. You can no longer find program descriptions here. Only WDR television is currently missing this information.
Shutdown instructions for the first?
Since November 13th, the first has also occasionally been broadcasting a ticker tape with shutdown instructions displayed at the top of the screen. His text: “! You watch this program in SD quality. SD will be discontinued on January 7, 2025. Switch to HD now. More information on teletext page 499 or on ard.digital.de”.
How often do the shutdown notices come?
The information about the near end of SD is available around the clock in the channel list, info box and the EPG. Treadmills or information boards have so far only been displayed very rarely. They are shown on average every 60 minutes, around half an hour, for a few minutes.
