The Paris ring road will gradually increase to 50 km/h from tomorrow. But will the 50 cc still be able to borrow it?
Despite the anger of motorists, the speed limit on the Paris ring road will increase, for the moment, to 50 km/h. This will be done on certain portions from tomorrow. Later, the entire axis should be limited to this speed. This new regulation would therefore theoretically allow smaller vehicles, namely scooters and cars without a license, to use the ring road. For the moment, nothing. is less certain.
The 50 cc will not yet be able to drive on the Paris ring road
In a press release granted in the newspaper Le Figaro, the Paris town hall has removed the doubt concerning the possible circulation of 50 cm3 on the Paris ring road. And the answer is no! For the moment, the smallest displacements will therefore not be able to use the most used route in France. The municipality put forward security arguments: “The limitation of traffic on the ring road to certain categories of users is not so much linked to the authorized speed limit but rather to the use made of the road. For the moment, it remains a very high-volume route, with vehicles regularly changing lanes, which leads to the need to maintain restrictions linked mainly to the safety of the most vulnerable users.
However, if we take the highway code regulations, nothing prevents, as it stands, 50 cc engines from driving on the ring road if it is limited to 50 km/h. In theory, it would therefore be necessary to add C107 signs at the entrances to the ring road to really be able to prohibit traffic for smaller engines and provide more clarity. It’s the square with a blue background and a white car. Later, however, the capital would consider this possibility, if there are more arrangements for it.
A gradual implementation of the limitation to 50 km/h
As mentioned above, the Paris ring road will not go entirely to 50 km/h tomorrow. The measurement will be done section by section, over the period from October 1 to 10. After this date the entire ring road will be limited to 50 km/h.
Tomorrow, the new limitation will concern the inner ring road from Porte des Lilas to Porte d’Orléans. Wednesday, it will be from Porte d’Orléans to Porte Dauphine. Thursday October 3, the 50 km/h will be implemented on the outer ring road from Porte de Bagnolet to Porte Maillot. Friday, it will be the inner ring road again, from Porte Dauphine to Porte des Lilas. On October 9, the transition will take place on the exterior part, from Porte Maillot to Porte de Châtillon. Finally, on October 10, it will be from Porte de Châtillon to Porte de Bagnolet on the outer ring road.
According to Paris town hall, this measure will serve to reduce the number of accidents on the axis. It will reduce air pollution due to C02 emissions from vehicles and will also reduce noise pollution. This will be closely monitored by the government and the Paris police chief.
In addition to the new speed regulations, the municipality also intends in the future to establish a lane reserved for carpooling. It would operate like the Olympic route set up during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
