Romanian law imposes several limits on high-tonnage vehicles, those that carry passengers or tow a trailer or caravan. Also, a number of obligations are imposed on drivers who perform an overtaking maneuver. For example, on a European road or a national road, are TIRs allowed to overtake other vehicles?
In Poland, no vehicle over 3.5 tons and a combination over 7 m long has the right to overtake on roads and highways with no more than two lanes per direction.
Exceptions to this rule are trucks overtaking maintenance vehicles or traveling at a speed below the 80 km/h limit. Is this rule also valid in Romania?
Are trucks allowed to overtake on the highway in Romania?
In Romania, traffic on the highway is allowed for all types of vehicles whose design speed allows exceeding 50 km/h. Exceptions are cars that learners learn to drive and vehicles that carry out oversized transport.
Another limitation imposed on heavy vehicles is that regarding maximum speed allowed.
Thus, trucks and vehicles with a trailer are obliged to travel 20 km/h slower than the rest of the vehicles.
So the shooters are allowed to overtake on the highway. But they are not allowed to drive more than 110 km/h. And, of course, they are required to follow all overtaking and overtaking rules.
Maximum speed for TIRs on Express Road and National Road
The maximum speeds allowed for TIRs, outside of loyalty, are:
- 110 km/h on the highway;
- 90 km/h on Express Road, National Road and European Road;
- 80 km/h on the other road categories.
In the locality, the maximum speed is 50 km/h for all categories of vehicles. But it may differ on certain road sections, but not more than 80 km/h and not less than 30 km/h.
These limits are set by the road administrator, with the consent of the Traffic Police.
Are trucks allowed to overtake on European or national roads?
The rules for overtaking are established by the Highway Code and all drivers are obliged to comply with them, regardless of the situation.
A driver is considered to be overtaking when he passes in front of another vehicle or past an obstacle, located in the same direction of traffic and makes a change of direction, leaving the traffic lane or the row of vehicles in which he was initial.
According to the law, the overtaking vehicle driver is obliged to:
- to ensure that the one following or preceding him has not signaled the intention to start a similar maneuver and that he can overtake without endangering or disturbing the traffic in the opposite direction;
- to signal the intention of overtaking;
- to keep a sufficient lateral distance from the overtaken vehicle while overtaking;
- to re-enter the lane or the original traffic lane after signaling and making sure that he can carry out this maneuver safely for the overtaken vehicle and for the other traffic participants.
Therefore, the road law does not establish a special traffic regime for TIRs. Which means that trucks can also perform overtaking, as long as they follow all the rules imposed to perform this maneuver.
In which situations are TIRs not allowed to overtake another vehicle
According to the law, it is forbidden to overtake vehicles:
- in intersections with undirected traffic;
- near ramp tops, when visibility is reduced below 50 m;
- in curves and in any other places where visibility is reduced below 50 m;
- on uneven passages, on bridges, under bridges and in tunnels. By way of exception, animal-drawn vehicles, unattached motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles can be overtaken in these places, if visibility on the road is ensured over a distance greater than 20 m, and the width of the road is at least 7 m;
- on pedestrian crossings signaled by signs and markings;
- on level crossings with the current railway and less than 50 m before them;
- next to the tram station, when it is stopped, and the station is not equipped with a pedestrian shelter;
- in the area of action of the “Overtaking prohibited” indicator;
- when, in order to perform the maneuver, the continuous marking, single or double, that separates the directions of travel is violated, and the vehicle travels, even partially, in the opposite direction, or the marking that delimits the prohibited space is violated;
- when another vehicle approaches from the opposite direction, and its driver is obliged to perform maneuvers to avoid the collision;
- on the road sector where a queue of waiting vehicles has formed, if through this you enter the opposite direction of traffic.
These rules also apply to TIRs, which are not allowed to exceed in any of the situations mentioned above.
Drivers who break the overtaking rules risk up to 60 days without a driver’s license.
