Are wreck control video cameras also used as radar devices? What do the authorities say?

Probably one of the biggest fears of drivers is not to be “caught” by the radar. Currently, hundreds of speed detection devices are used by the Traffic Police to check compliance with legal limits. But are the video cameras for the control of the wreckage also used by the authorities as radar devices?

For several years, a list of the locations where the so-called “fixed radars” are located has been circulating on the Internet.

In reality, these are the video cameras used by Compania de Drumuri (CNAIR) to check the wreckage.

Where are the fixed radars located in Romania?

According to the data of the Traffic Police, at the national level, approximately 350 radar devices operate every day, on average. These are either mounted on police vehicles or are the well-known radar guns.

Both types of devices belong, however, to the category of mobile radars. There is currently no fixed vehicle speed detection device.

The only fixed video detection devices are those of the National Road Company. However, these cameras are not equipped with systems for determining the speed of vehicles. For now!

Radar cameras on high speed roads

The authorities have purchased a modern video traffic monitoring system. Video cameras, the installation of which has already begun, will detect both the speed of movement of cars and other deviations of drivers.

For example, those who drive dangerously, have aggressive behavior or drive in the emergency lane. Also, drivers will be warned of some dangers by means of digital information panels.

The new system is very complex and will have multiple uses. It will be able to be used both to check the payment of the wreckage, for example, and to detect the speed or other information about the vehicle. It is very likely that they can also determine whether a vehicle is registered and has a valid ITP. The installation of these systems has already begun and they will become functional from next year”, said the spokesperson of CNAIR, Alin Șerbănescu, for ProMotor.

The fixed radars will be installed on the A1, A2, A3 and National Road 1 highways.

So, for now, the wreckage cameras do not detect the speed of the cars. But from next year, some of these devices will also have the function of radar and toll check.
