Are you allowed to cross the solid line on the outside of the road? What the updated Highway Code establishes

The updated Highway Code establishes which road markings are mandatory for all drivers and under which conditions some lines may be legally crossed by drivers. For example, are you allowed to step on the solid line on the outside of the road?

Road markings have the role of organizing traffic, warning or guiding traffic participants.

They can sometimes be accompanied by other means of road signaling that complement or specify their meaning.

Types of road markings

The markings are applied to the surface of the carriageway of roads, curbs, works of art, road accessories, as well as other elements and constructions in the road area.

This marking must contain a special reflective paint or be accompanied by reflective devices.

The markings applied on public roads are:

  • longitudinal, which can be:
    • separation of traffic directions;
    • of lane separation in the same direction;
  • delimitation of the carriageway;
  • transversal, which can be:
    • stop;
    • giving way;
    • pedestrian crossing;
    • crossing for cyclists;
  • various, which can be:
    • guidance;
    • for restricted spaces;
    • for the prohibition of parking;
    • for bus stations, trolleybuses, taximeters;
    • for parking spaces;
    • arrows or inscriptions;
  • sides applied to:
    • works of art (bridges, uneven passages, retaining walls);
    • window sill;
    • poles and trees located on the road bed;
    • borders.

Are you allowed to cross the solid line on the outside of the road?

According to the law, it is forbidden to overtake if this maneuver violates the solid line. You can perform this maneuver only if the marking is discontinuous or if the continuous line is accompanied by a broken line, in your own direction of travel.

The law also states that the continuous line at the side of the road cannot be crossed either. This is a boundary line on the carriageway where the road manager does not allow drivers to park, park or turn in that area.

Therefore, you are not allowed to step on the continuous line on the outside of the road unless it is also accompanied by a discontinuous marking.
