A group of 40 workers on green receipts at Global Media announced, this Tuesday, the suspension of collaboration for an indefinite period due to lack of payment, confirmed to Lusa with the Journalists’ Union (SJ).
According to a union source, these employees have not received their salaries for two months.
According to an email sent by these collaborators, to which Lusa had access, it is “a group of around 40 journalists, photojournalists and graphic designers on green receipts who today interrupted their collaboration with Jornal de Notícias, Notícias Magazine, O Jogo, Volta ao Mundo, TSF and Diário de Notícias, for an indefinite period”.
This interruption is due to the fact that they have not yet received payments for April and May, without the “management of Global Media Group (GMG) having provided any justification for this, over these months, despite constant attempts to contact them and requests for clarification”.
Employees also worked in June, but this month is usually paid in August, as they are paid two months later.
“The decision to stop working was communicated to management last Thursday, July 11, if the amounts in question were not paid by yesterday, the 15th, which did not happen”, the workers said in the letter sent.
“This situation affects around 130 journalists, photojournalists and graphic designers on green receipts, who feel disrespected because they are not being paid for the work they have done and are outraged by the silence of the administration”, they continue, referring that, “in recent months, several dates have been put forward to finalise the sale of Jornal de Notícias, JN História, O Jogo, Volta ao Mundo, Notícias Magazine, Evasões, TSF, N-TV and Delas, without this having happened”.
They point out that “it was necessary to reach this point for the management of Global Media to react and respond to individual requests for explanation, shortly after they received” the email communicating the suspension.
But, “despite this, in these individual responses, the payment of debts to us depends on the completion of the deal with the new group, Notícias Ilimitadas, when we know that it has already transferred around four million euros, also with the aim of paying us, a commitment that the administrators of Global Media have not fulfilled”, they highlight.
“We are aware that our stoppage will affect the work of our colleagues in the newsroom, editors and management, which we regret, but we felt that we had no alternative but to stop and raise awareness of the existence of this problem, which is affecting us financially and psychologically,” they emphasize.
The hope, they say, “is that outstanding payments will be settled quickly” and that “the deal with the Notícias Ilimitadas group will be concluded”.
