Already at night, the weather will turn upside down. Heavy rainfall is expected, as a result of which the Environment Agency of the Republic of Slovenia (Arso) has issued an orange warning for the entire country.
Today it will be partly clear with variable cloud cover, even mostly sunny in the afternoon, but the heat will continue to press. The highest daily temperatures will be from 28 to 33, in Primorska, with a weak storm, up to 36 degrees Celsius. According to Arsa meteorologists, there will be some showers and storms in the northwest of the country in the afternoon, which will continue into the evening. Compared to the last days and weeks, a change awaits us already in the night hours. Storms will become more frequent at night, and by morning they will spread over a large part of the country, with the possibility of heavier downpours.
“A high-altitude disturbance is approaching us from the west, which will cross us on Saturday during the day and end the long-lasting heat wave,” announced at Ars, where they also issued an orange warning for the entire country for today and tomorrow. Abundant rainfall is expected, and it may fall locally in a short period of time “very much rain.” Individual showers and storms will begin to appear first in the afternoon, especially in the Alpine world, but meteorologists expect the majority of “stormy weather events” mainly at night and tomorrow morning, and in some places also in the morning. “A system of showers and storms will be renewed over the greater part of Slovenia, which will mainly bring heavy downpours.” The focus of precipitation will initially be mainly in the northern half of Slovenia, but tomorrow morning and early morning we expect heavy downpours elsewhere as well. The storm system will probably cross Slovenian Istria and the southernmost part of Slovenia early tomorrow morning. Tramontana can blow for a short time by the sea. The weather will calm down on Saturday afternoon.
Locally, up to 150 millimeters can fall
As meteorologists explained, the heavy rainfall will be the result of “a very moist air mass and wind that will change direction with height,” as a shallow cyclone will form over the northern Mediterranean. The average wind speed will be relatively low, so the storm cells will move fairly slowly and may also renew over the same area. Weather model calculations show that “40 to 100 mm will fall in 6 to 12 hours, and locally up to 150 mm of rain. The greatest probability of prolonged downpours will be in the northern half of Slovenia, however, due to the uncertainty, we have issued an orange warning for the entire country.”
It will calm down on Saturday
Saturday morning will be initially cloudy with precipitation, but there will still be thunderstorms in parts. Precipitation will weaken during the day from the west and gradually stop. It will become clear again on Saturday evening. Temperatures will finally be a bit lower. In the morning from 16 to 21, in Primorska around 23, daily highs from 21 to 25, in Primorska around 30 degrees Celsius.
Sunday will initially be mostly clear with some fog in the valleys, but in the afternoon showers and thunderstorms will start to appear from the west. It will be warmer again. Monday will be changeable with occasional local showers or thunderstorms.
Hydrological warning
At Ars, they warn that with such heavy rainfall, despite the current drought, they expect a very rapid increase, especially in torrential water flows and, of course, storm water. On Saturday night and Saturday morning, torrential watercourses and smaller rivers will rise rapidly, especially in northern and central Slovenia, but also in other parts of the country. At Ars. At the same time, flooding can occur in these areas along torrential channels and smaller rivers. Rainwater and backwaters will also flood in several parts of the country. “The situation is potentially dangerous, so we will tighten the weather warning if necessary,” they stated at Ars.
